A Silver Lining for the 80 years of Tradition – The BEC spirit is unhampered during the challenging time for the Batangas province due to the Taal Volcano eruption.
In recognition for the 80 years of meaningful existence, Batangas Eastern Colleges plans to hold a series of events to observe the annual tradition. However, this year’s festivities have been put into an unexpected turn wherein the founding anniversary was celebrated in a less jubilant yet more intimate way.
It was not long ago when the eruption of Taal Volcano caused many heartbreaking scenes all across the Batangas province – particularly the areas located near the famous Taal beauty. As the unforeseen calamity rekindled the compassion hearts of Batangueños for Bayanihan campaigns, Batangas Eastern Colleges decided to make necessary adjustments on the planned activities to join the bandwagon of giving significant contributions for the people greatly affected by the natural disaster.
Our heart goes out to every Batangueños and as a sincere expression of sympathy, several activities that were initially made to surprise the Beacons had to be compressed or unfortunately canceled. Some of the supposed highlights for the celebration were the postponement of the “January Jam” (a much-anticipated concert featuring two of the well-known Filipino rock bands), the cancellation of the “Light Parade” (a whimsical parade of lights) and several Interschool competitions.
However, “all’s well that ends well!” is what we can say for the sudden turn of events. It may be perceived as a saddening circumstance but what makes it even a BETTER and MEANINGFUL celebration was finding a silver lining to the current situation. So, aligned with the school’s theme for this school year of 2019-2020, the BEC Family dedicatedly offered their time to extend their love and truly became a light that touches lives!
It will surely be a Founding Anniversary to be remembered as the San Juan’s premier educational institution was transformed from being an avenue of learning to become a place filled with warmth and a welcoming haven for the refugees affected by the eruption of Taal Volcano. After several days of passionate community work, the BEC Family sets a date for everyone to get-together and to enjoy a simple dinner party.
Held at the BEC Gymnasium and in time for this month’s Professional Learning Conference, a special program was organized on the 3rd day of February. An awarding ceremony for every BEC employees was given for their compassionate hearts and eager participation to extend a helping hand for the Taal refugees. Different teams (Bikoy, Bea, Ash, Tala, Sunny, and Bob) received a certificate, plaque, and letters of appreciation. Over a sumptuous dinner, a happy and celebratory air circulated amidst the simplicity of the event. Even though the venue has a minimalist décor, the BEC family added a colorful vibe with their Tie-dye shirts. The announcement made by the Treasures Bookstore also gave a cheer as they offer new services that can be availed by every BEC employee.
It may not be as big as the previous celebration, but it was without a doubt a night where everyone can reflect on how we are all interconnected – in BEC spirit!
