To enlighten the minds and embolden the hearts of the Beacon journalists, The Lighthouse Summer Camp 2023 was held by The Lighthouse, the official Student Publication of the College Department & Technical-Vocational Center at the South Poblacion Campus last 27th and 28th of July, 2023.
With the theme “CAMPUS JOURNALISM: Providing Insights, Networking Opportunities, and Real-World Perspective on the Industry“, the two-day event was abuzz with energy and enthusiasm. Beacon journalists from different colleges experienced an exhilarating opportunity to delve deeper into the captivating realm of campus journalism. They had the privilege of participating in a diverse range of workshop activities that uncovered the various facets of campus journalism. Esteemed resource speakers graced the occasion, sharing their insights and wisdom with the eager campers.
Elevating the Experience: Meet the Resource Speakers of The Lighthouse Summer Camp 2023
The line-up of distinguished speakers included luminaries from the various field of journalism and media:
- Mr. Marlon Alexandor Luistro enlightened participants on the art of Editorial Writing.
- Mr. Ryan Tibayan shared his expertise in Photography, unraveling the secrets behind captivating images.
- Mr. Joseph Alfred Zabala enthralled attendees with his knowledge of Creative Media, encompassing both Photography and Videography.
- Mr. Ace Medrano Sayat delved into the world of Investigative & Data Journalism, showcasing the power of truth-seeking through words.
Each of the speakers was gracious enough to share their experiences covering news affairs, documentaries, and personal stories of their career journey – offering not only inspiration but knowledge on the necessary skillset in producing high-impact stories that go beyond journalism competitions.
Dr. Ernesto Manalo Jr. and Dr. Zenaida Delos Reyes, the seasoned mentors from BEC, further enriched the learning experience. Budding Sports writers, Layout artists, and Feature writers had the opportunity to fine-tune their skills under the guidance of these esteemed mentors. Participants eagerly soaked in the expertise shared by Dr. Manalo and Dr. Delos Reyes, enhancing their grasp of Sports Writing, Feature Writing, and Layouting.
Throughout the event, campers were accompanied by invited facilitators providing support to every workshop activity. The invited facilitators included Dr. Ernesto Manalo Jr., and Dr. Zenaida Delos Reyes, both College Professors at BEC and seasoned advisers, together with Ms. Adreah Anne B. Pesanon, Content Writer from the Strategic Communications Office. Their presence added an extra layer of insight and guidance, empowering participants to explore the challenging world of journalism.
The “Lighthouse Summer Camp 2023” was undeniably a beacon of knowledge, camaraderie, and skill-building. It is only the second time for The Lighthouse to organize such an event, with the first being held pre-pandemic (November 2022). The organization officially materialized in 2019 but was momentarily sheltered due to COVID-19. However, with the Beacon spirit burning and alit with determination, The Lighthouse and its members forge its way stronger and pens armed with vigor.
At the end of the 2-day camp, the members carried with them a newfound zeal, equipped with insights, networking opportunities, and a tangible real-world perspective on the industry. The echoes of this transformative experience will evidently resonate for years to come, leaving an indelible mark on the budding Beacon journalists.
